In 2023, Tesla sold around 230,000 more cars than BYD. That drop was big enough for Tesla, which sold 386,810 BEVs in the same period, to retake its former position despite posting plunging sales. Both Tesla and BYD are expanding beyond their home markets and investing in factories abroad. BYD sold about 3 million electric cars, including hybrids, in 2023 globally. By comparison, Tesla, which does not sell hybrids, delivered a total of 1.8 million vehicles worldwide last year, which was about 19% of the global market for BEVs.

CNN —Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles, is recalling 338,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees in the United States because parts of the front suspension could become loose. The recall includes both Jeep Grand Cherokee and the longer Grand Cherokee L, which has three rows of seats. As of late January, Stellantis was not aware of any crashes or injuries resulting from the issue, according to official documents. Some of these vehicles could have bolts in the front suspension that were damaged during assembly. Owners who want to check if their vehicle is involved in the recall can go to NHTSA’s Safercar.gov website.

BANGKOK (AP) — Stellantis plans to invest about 1.5 billion euros, or about $1.6 billion, in Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, the companies said late Wednesday. The European-based maker of Jeep and Ram and Leapmotor said in a joint statement that they have formed a strategic partnership and joint venture that aims to expand the Chinese EV maker’s sales both inside and outside of China. Stellantis said it expects to benefit from Leapmotor’s “tech-first EV ecosystem” in China to meet its own targets for shifting to electric vehicles. The companies said the 51% Stellantis-led joint venture will have exclusive rights to export and sell Leapmotor’s vehicles outside China. Leapmotor has focused on the mid- to high-end of the EV market in China, selling 111,000 electric vehicles in 2022.

In a few cases, according to NHTSA, ARC air bag inflators could be blocked by small pieces of debris, stopping the gases from escaping as they should. In May 2023, General Motors recalled 1 million GM vehicles with the air bags. NHTSA estimated the risk of one of these inflators rupturing at one in every 370,000 air bag deployments. But officials said the only way to know if an air bag has the defect is for it to actually rupture. NHTSA and various automakers are still working to get vehicle owners to replace all the air bags involved in that recall.

"The reason we ask for 40% pay increases is because in the last four years alone, the CEO pay went up 40%. U.S. companies, in contrast, use grant date value of stock packages awarded to executives during the reporting year. AdvertisementAdvertisementThat's because in some years, talking about a CEO's "realized pay" can obscure exorbitant pay packages approved by company boards. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe CEOs of GM and Ford also saw their compensation packages peak in 2021, before declining slightly in 2022. However you slice the numbers, the gap between CEO pay and rank-and-file workers at all three companies is gigantic.

In its annual renumeration report, Stellantis reported CEO Carlos Tavares' 2022 pay was 23.46 million euros. That's a nearly 77% increase over then Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley's 2019 pay of 13.28 million euros. However you slice the numbers, the gap between CEO pay and rank-and-file workers at all three companies is gigantic. It's far above the typical pay gap at S&P 500 companies, which was 186-1 according to AP's annual CEO pay survey, which uses data analyzed by Equilar. CEO Elon Musk's 2022 compensation was reported as zero in the company's proxy statement, rendering its official pay ratio meaningless.

The United Auto Workers labor union launched targeted strikes against the three Detroit automakers early Friday morning. It's the first time in history that the UAW has struck all three of the Detroit automakers at once. GM's Cadillac and Chevrolet brands had just 46 days' and 51 days' worth of vehicles, respectively; the Ford brand had 77 days' worth. Historically, the Detroit automakers have tended to have somewhat larger supplies on hand because their full-size pickups are offered in many different configurations. In contrast to the strike against Stellantis, the UAW's strike against Ford could be relatively brief.

Rebecca Cook | ReutersDETROIT — United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain promised union members he'd do things differently during contract talks with the Detroit automakers this year. Playing hard ball"We're in the process of changing the culture of this union from a reactionary, defensive union, to an aggressive and offensive-minded union," Fain said last month during a Facebook livestream. The deals cover roughly 150,000 UAW members who work for the automakers. "The federal government is pouring billions into the electric vehicle transition, with no strings attached and no commitment to workers," Fain said earlier this year.

This time it was Alfa Romeo, an Italian car with a reputation for excitement – but not necessarily trouble-free ownership. Alfa Romeo leaped 24 places in the rankings to third overall, with 143 problems per 100 vehicles. Not every Stellantis brand ranked near the top, though, or even close. Last year, four Stellantis brands, including Ram and Alfa Romeo, were below average. Even if Alfa Romeo has improved enormously, it will be a long while before those scores changes much.

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File PhotoWASHINGTON, April 17 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a bid by General Motors Co (GM.N) to revive its racketeering lawsuit against rival automaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), now part of Franco-Italian automaker Stellantis NV , over bribery allegations involving the United Auto Workers union. Stellantis in a statement praised the court's decision to turn away what it described as "baseless claims" by GM. "Today's decision upholding the district court's dismissal of GM's lawsuit is another reaffirmation that its claims are meritless," Stellantis said. FCA paid a $30 million fine while the UAW agreed to independent oversight to resolve the U.S. Justice Department investigation.

"The affordability is not there, because the raw materials are scarce and very expensive, and I would add very volatile," Tavares said. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has emphasized just how much of a challenge getting these materials will be for EV-makers. Even mining executives have expressed concern that demand for these materials continues to outstrip the current available supply.
Jeep Maker Stellantis Downshifts Ambitions in China

When he took over Jeep maker Stellantis NV nearly two years ago, Chief Executive Carlos Tavares made it among his top priorities to jump-start the auto maker’s China business. Now, he is scaling back those ambitions. Stellantis, which was formed through the merger of France’s PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV in January 2021, had given priority to efforts to boost its relatively meager sales in China. Mr. Tavares said shortly after the merger that Stellantis would remain in the country long term and would devise a strategy to become successful in the world’s largest car market by vehicle sales.
